Pianoroom: A journey from Aspiration to Musical Excellence

During my childhood, learning piano wasn’t easy, as finding a good piano teacher always proved to be a struggle. The lack of consistent guidance made it hard to build a musical foundation. Yet, years later this very same feeling inspired me to create Pianoroom—a place where others wouldn't face the same hurdles.

Let me take you back to where it all began…

My story

Some of my fondest memories involve eagerly tapping keys on my toy keyboard to Bollywood tunes, dancing in the living room while my uncle played a miniature drum set he brought from Oman, and persuading my mother to buy me a pretend guitar during our market visits.

Music was always a part of me, but it wasn’t until I turned 10 and received a used keyboard as a gift from a relative that my musical journey truly began.

My mother thought it was the perfect time for me to start keyboard lessons at a local teacher’s house. Around the same time, my school introduced keyboard lessons focusing on Western music. These experiences not only exposed me to different musical styles but also gave me the confidence to perform at school and community events. Each performance opened up a whole new world of excitement and possibilities for me.

However, amidst these successes, there was a recurring challenge that plagued my journey: finding a reliable piano teacher. This ongoing struggle became a major obstacle in my path. Every few months, a teacher would leave or disappear, and the cycle of searching for a new instructor would begin again. This inconsistency disrupted my learning process and caused immense frustration for me as a child. Afterall, all I really wanted to do was to learn how to play the piano, but it seemed like an elusive dream.

Sadly, a combination of factors—increased travel time to lessons, changing teachers, and academic pressure—led 13-year-old me to reluctantly quit piano.

Years passed, but my passion for music never wavered. As I approached my 12th-grade CBSE board exams—a pivotal moment for university admissions—a realization struck me: if I didn’t pursue my dreams now, I might never have the chance. It was a now-or-never moment, and the stakes couldn’t have been higher.

So, like every young rebel, I rejected authority—namely, the traditional academic path—and decided to pursue music after acing my board exams. My parents were against this, and so was my extended family of 14 people, full of engineers, doctors, and entrepreneurs. Coming from such a background, music wasn’t seen as a viable career option. But I firmly stood by my choice and refused to deter.

Despite initial resistance, I took a bold step and rejected an offer from one of Delhi's top universities. Instead, I dedicated a year to intensive piano study, practicing 6-8 hours a day and successfully passing my Grade 8 ABRSM exam.

During this transformative period, I stumbled upon A.R. Rahman’s Music Conservatory through a friend's recommendation. To my surprise and delight, I was not only accepted but also granted direct entry into the second year of the program. Studying at the conservatory was a revelation—I met like-minded individuals, collaborated with diverse musicians, and immersed myself in a rich tapestry of musical experiences that shaped me profoundly.

Eager to deepen my musical knowledge, I ventured westward to pursue a BMus (Music) at the University of Huddersfield, UK. There, under the tutelage of esteemed mentors like Jonathan Fisher, Dr. Daniel White, and Dr. Geoff Cox, I studied piano performance, music research, and composition. It was a nerve-wracking yet exhilarating period of growth and discovery, where I learned, performed, and evolved both as a musician and as a person.

Finally receiving the comprehensive musical education I had yearned for underscored the importance of ensuring others have access to quality music education, inspiring me to start Pianoroom to offer online one-to-one piano lessons and ensure that no one else in the world is restricted by the lack of good teachers or their geographical location.

Learning the piano was a challenging journey for me, but through Pianoroom, I aim to make it accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Today, as a dedicated musician and educator, my mission is clear: to support others on their musical journeys and ensure that solid music education is accessible to all. I want to be the piano teacher I needed when I was a kid. This is why my teaching approach is full of fun, kindness, passion, and consistency. Rest assured, I give 200% effort to each of my classes and make sure that my students learn while having fun.
